The information from the Collectd Kafka monitoring metrics is used to show usage by the different user groups.

The MONIT service accounts on the Kafka bytes_in for every producer we have whitelisted in the infrastructure and displays a daily summary of the usage per charge group (the current producer-chargegroup mapping can be found in here).

The why to use Kafka as the source for the usage resides in the fact that, being the central core of the infrastructure it provides the closest overview to the amount of data handled within MONIT for each producer.
